| | Revised Genlisea pot - Step by Step « Thread Started on Aug 25, 2004, 9:31pm » | |
I was not crazy about my other Genlisea pot because of the thin plastic drinking cup I was using. So the past few days I've been looking around and trying to find something sturdier then the thin cup. This is what I came up with.
What I found that look good was a Rubbermaid 1/2 cup container. I believe Glad and another company also had 1/2 cup containers, but the were the same thin plastic as the drinking cup.

1. I cut the tab off the top which the top of the container snapped onto. I used a pair of tin snips to do this. Then I used an utility knife to cut the remaining plastic as close to the lip as I could.

2. I then used a sander to smooth it to the lip.

3. I then placed some tape around the container under the lip which I could follow and make a straight cut using a scroll saw to remove the bottom of the container.

4. I then used the sander to remove the remaining plastic to the tape line.
5. I then cut the plastic piece that is on the bottom of the container at a craft store. I do not have the package anymore. I think it was in the yarn, knitting area. Bought the large round ones and cut it to fit snug in the bottom of the container. I then used aquarium seal to make sure the plastic piece would not come out.

6. The finished pots lip resting on the rim of a glass drinking cup.

7. All I have to do is let my leaf cutting get a little bigger of my Genlisea lobata and transfer it to this new pot and let the traps grow into the water that will be in the glass below.

MK, The scroll saw I have now is smooth as silk. The old one would have been bumpy and jerky. I got a very nice one about 3 years ago with a variable speed control on it when I started to get into making Intarsia. You can see my projects here: http://www.geocities.com/elgecko1989/Woodworking.html

Treaqum, That's good. Help it works well. I also use this pot for my Utricularia as well.
