 Drosophyllum lusitanicum germination
« Thread Started on Apr 23, 2007, 9:20pm »

My Drosophyllum lusitanicum was growing for over 2 and a half years. It took around 2 years before the plant flowered for me which it started in November 2006. After continual flowering the plant looked really bad in February and eventually died.
I placed a few seeds in some pots hoping to grow this plant again. Well I noticed today while watering my plants that a seed has germinated so far.

This is the one I just sanded the seed coat and placed in the pot.

This is the one I sanded the seed coat and cut the tip off. It soaked in water for 36 hours.

I just started to place the plants outside in full sun when I get home from work, typically 4:00 - 4:30 to sunset. I bring them back inside at night till I get home from work again the next day. The plants are very small and do not want them out in full sun all day, plus you never know when a surprise thunder storm might come along and create a mess for the tiny plants.

I placed both plants outside around 11:00 after watering them a few Saturdays ago after work. I went back outside to water the other outdoor plants around 5:00 PM. At the time I took a quick look to make sure both Dewy Pines where doing OK, since they usually are not out in full sun that long yet. The larger plant was fine, but the smaller plants roots must not be as deep. It was a little dried up plant.
I have a few seeds left to try. Next time I'll wait till the plant is a little bigger before letting it outside as long as I did.

In case anyone wonders, it took me 5 seeds to get these 2 plants. The other seeds still have not germinated and at this point I do not expect them to.

I thought I'd update this thread.

1 or the 2 seeds I had germinated, died.
Here is what the 1 that lived currently looks like.

I was very worried about the plant because it was flowering when it was less then 1 year old, last plant died after flowering.

My last plant was 2 and a half years old before flowering. After which it had died.
I have a new thought why the original plant died. When it was flowering it looked terrible. The leaves looked as if they where not getting enough water, so I increased the amount I was watering it. Dewy Pines do not like a lot of water and I think I killed it that way.

The current plant was also looking terrible while flowering, but I did not increase the watering. The plant has finished flowering and has 3 new growth points now which look very good.

I decided it best to try to germinate some new seed in case the plant would have taken a turn for the worst. I usually only place 2 seeds in a pot when I try to germinate this plant, but I placed 3 in and a week or so later a 4th seed. Currently I see that 2 seeds have germinated. Germination was around 3-4 weeks.

The others may germinate as well, and then I will see if it is true or false that only one plant can live in a pot. I have read a few different experiences with this.
